Where do I begin? I fell into Triathlon thanks to my cousin Wesley and "dabbled" for a little while after finishing high school as a way of keeping fit during the off season. Netball was my sporting goal and focus and no matter how many people kept telling me I was too short.... I continued to play! Along came Budgie!
It took a couple of years for him to convince me to go long, I knew I didn't have alot of speed and endurance may be the better option, but I was not sure about the whole Ironman thing!
It all began in Foster 2004 and qualifying for Hawaii in the 25-29 AG. I must admit, I crashed and burned that year, caught up in the whole "Hawaii" experience plus a move to Vancouver, Canada for a year on a teacher exchange. But I went back to Hawaii in 2005 and finishing 3rd in the 25 29 AG and 5th Amateur to cross the line changed everything!
Now I can't believe it! His guidance, professional programs and belief in me have lead to where I am today. Competing professionally and at a level I never thought possible!
We make a great team and I look forward to raising the bar with every program and every race to achieve the ultimate goal!

It was about 10 years ago that I traded my basketball shoes and hoop dreams for a pair of runners and a secondhand road bike. My first triathlon was a novice series race at Pt Walter and a novice I truly was for I did the whole thing in a pair of loose-fitting running shorts and baggy tank top. However, I managed to get across the line first in my age group and thought to myself, this triathlon thing is easy…..How wrong I was!
It was not long after this that I first met Budge. After walking into his gym unannounced and unknown, I ended up walking out several hours later after Budge spent the afternoon tinkering with my bike set up. He did what he could but I left the gym with one clear message in my head — I needed a new bike. Some things never change and to this day I leave Budgies gym with new and better ways to part with my hard earned cash.
Budge and I have since worked together to get me where I am today — a keen Ironman triathlete. For me, Ironman offers a great window to view and enjoy life. There are always challenges, pitfalls and triumphs and the odd ridiculous moment. Deciding it would be a good idea to swim to Rottnest knowing I was prone to a bit of seasickness was one such ridiculous moment but still it’s an experience I will not forget in a hurry. On a more enjoyable note, cycling through the Alps in Europe is an experience I will cherish and what I love about these types of adventures is that they are all somehow or another part of Ironman training.
Right now I am churning out the k’s in an effort to get myself back to Kona to give the race a real crack. Beyond that, I would love some day to be on the start line as a professional triathlete. With a great team around me especially with Budge and my wonderful wife Claire, I am keen to see just how far I can go.

Rottnest Half Ironman, 2000 (1st in age group)
Margaret River Half Ironman, 2001 (4th place overall)

‘Budgie’ Background
Like many people, my first Ironman dreams started when I watched Greg Welch win the 1994 Hawaiian Ironman on the ‘Wide World of Sports’. Having successfully completed three Busselton Half Ironman races (2002 -2004), I decided it was time to fulfil a personal dream and try to complete an Ironman race. At the beginning of 2004 I decided to embark on the famous Ironman journey. As I lived in Bassendean and was in very close proximity to Trysport, I sort the guidance of ‘Budgie’. From that moment on Andrew has guided me to five successful Ironman finishes which culminated in a personal best at the 2006 Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. Presently I am just ‘keeping fit’ as I became a Dad shortly after Hawaii. In the future I hope to return to Ironman and as always it will be under the guidance of ‘Budgie’, a super coach who has helped me live my dreams.

I started triathlons 6 years ago as a way to keep fit during the football off-season. Many sprint, Olympic and two half Ironmans later I had given up football and was concentrating on Ironman races. The 2004 Forster Ironman was my first taste of endurance racing and I was hooked.
Later that year I suffered a serious injury which required surgery and put me out of the sport for 2 years. A lot of hardwork and encouragement from Budgie enabled me to return to Ironman racing in December 2006 at Busso with a dream of qualifying for Hawaii. However I didn’t get a spot at Busso so I headed to New Zealand where I qualified for Hawaii with a 2nd placing in my age group. Hawaii was a dream come true and everything I had imagined. It is as hard as everyone says but it is the pinnacle of the sport and I hope to return there one day. With all that training under my belt I decided to race Busso ’07 knowing a break from racing was around the corner due to the arrival of my first child in April. The race went perfectly and I excelled beyond my own expectations. Experience counts for a lot in Ironman racing.

I once believed that I was one of "those people" who wasn't any good at sport, or running in particular. Then I met Andrew, and I am now on my way to my first half marathon. Like a lot of people, I was a little afraid of running, a little intimidated by the thought of it and just believed that some people are not built to do it. Andrew challenged me to face my fears, count my blessings and embark upon a wonderful journey that sees me running four times a week, with distances around 10k now the norm. If you knew me before, you'd realise how amazing this is. My most recent race was the 2007 WAMC Club Bridges. I finished the 10k in 57.40, which for me was a big achievement. I've still got a long way to go, but I am enjoying the ride and looking foward to the challenges.

Moved to WA in 1996 making Bunbury my home. From the age of 19 long distance running became a part of my life but also resulted in many injuries. I completed numerous marathons with the highlight been a 2:58 at the South African champs in 1988.I had a break from1990 to 1992 when I had my three children but was soon on the road again and tackled the comrades marathon in 1994 (88km) with a 7:22 placing 9th overall in the ladies. Battled with a few lower leg injuries and took up triathlons once moving to Australia. Joined the Bunbury Triathlon club and have been a member ever since, with my three kids also very involved, a lifestyle we all love and enjoy doing together.

Years in triathlon: 3 as a teenager, now another 3

Background:
I have always been into sport and actually won a triathlon at Rockingham as a junior. My first Triathlon was at Hillarys boat harbour in the old Milo series. I grew up admiring guys like Greg Welch but never thought I would do an Ironman race.
I was in the WA orienteering team through high school and travelled interstate on several occasions, I also won a national junior Rogaining championship but ankle and knee injuries eventually put this to bed.
This also stopped triathlon and running without strapped ankles became impossible.
So I took up Kayaking and 5 Avon descents later decided to give running a go again.
We had just got IMWA in Busselton and the triathlon fire began to burn again.
With Andrew's help I raced 2 Half Ironmans before my first IMWA, and since have raced at Port Mac and Bussselton a second time. If I ever learn to run quickly again I might start looking at a good Ironman time.

Julie Saunders
DOB: 18/12/1981
Born: Perth
Club: North Coast Tri Club (previously UWA Tri Club)
Previous Sport: Hockey
Favourite Distance: IRONMAN
Favourite Leg: RUN (finally I am off that bike)
Favourite IM sayings: Pain today - IM forever (If you have to ask why you will never unerstand)
Background: I took up triathlon in 2003 at which point I had been involved in swimming (well I made reserve for one of the relay teams) and cross country at high school but had pretty much only ever ridden in primary school. I joined the UWA tri club where Hamish Johnston was coach and started the season with the shortest distance race that I could find. By the end of the season I found myself competing in the Busselton half ironman!
At Busselton I qualified for Forster (Ironman Oz), and under the instruction that if I did not take the spot I would always regret it, my IM journey began.
I started training under Budgie for the Busselton 2005 IM and have recently, after moving to the Northern suburbs, joined the North Coast Tri Club. His programs are anything but light on, but all the effort has definaltely brought its reward. Qualifying once for Kona was a dream - twice unimaginable. Budgie has taken me futher that I ever thought possible when I started, but even better, he has given me the basis to see that I still have further to go.
IM Achievements To Date:
- Forster (IM OZ) 2004: 13:09
- Busselton 2005: 11:50; 2nd F18-24
- Port Macquarie (IM OZ) 2006: 11:23; 1st F18-24
- Hawaii 2006; 12:56
- Busselton 2007: 10:30; 3rd F25-29
- Hawaii 2008: .....

Rick Twine
Date of Birth: 25th Sept 1964
Sport: Triathlon
Coach: Andrew Budge “ Trysport”
Years competing: 4
Background: Not so many years ago I weighed 115kg smoked “rollies” and listed my main hobby as “Beer drinking” After a run in with hospital due to a back injury I decided that a change had to be made. After physio and pilates came the pool. I thought I was getting somewhere when I could swim for 30 minutes non-stop. Then I started riding to the pool and back. That year I had a go at MTB racing and enjoyed it immensely. As the weight started to drop I went for a run for the first time in years and found that I could get back home without an ambulance. Then came illumination….”What about a triathlon?” after several months of training I entered the Rockingham sprint and after crossing the line I knew that this was not going to go away.
I am very much in the midpack! I love the challenge and lifestyle that triathlon represents and I am hooked on the infectious buzz that is Ironman week. My children see training, racing, participating and looking after your body as a normal part of life. I also suspect that my wife is far happier with an 85kg husband.
Achievements:
- Season 03/04: Raced 5 times and finished with the Busso half in 5.16
- Season 04/05: Raced 14 or so times with an 11:15 IMWA as a highlight. Busso Half 4.48
- Season 05/06: Dropped the short course down and concentrated on long. IMWA 11.07, IMOZ 10.21, Busso Half 4.39
- Season 06/07: More long course. IMWA 10.12 IMOZ 10.31 Gold coast half 4.43, Busso Half 4.39
- Season 07/08: Started with IMWA 10.07 and a very happy finish to a great day. Next is IMOZ.
The ultimate goal is to somehow snatch a spot to Kona. With a good race and some luck I may scrape in. |

Weight: 72kgs
I had a work place accident in November 1996 which resulted in permanent damage to my spinal cord a T10/11. I am now a complete Paraplegic at this level. I was introduced to handcycles in 1998, my first bike was a Quickie Shadow, which I brought for recreational purpose only, but soon got the bug for speed and competition, I then brought a Varna Speed cycle which is more suited for my needs at the time. My interest started slowly in Handcycles and as the years followed, more and more people got cycles we started to have state competitions. I have just recently updated my bike to a Schmicking which is a huge improvement on my previous bikes and my times have improved considerably. I love the exercise that handcycling gives me; it allows me to keep my weight down and lead a more healthy life. Through the guidance and coaching of Andrew I have managed to qualify and represent Australia in three world cycling competitions as seen below.

Name: Russell Horlin
DOB: 16/9/67
Born: Perth
Club: Bunbury Triathlon Club
Years in triathon: 10th season
Family: Cath, Gabby and Darcy
Started triathlon: at 31 years of age which extended playing Aussie Rules until 34. I found it took me to a level of fitness Ihad not achieved before. I also love the challenge and the healthy culture and the peolpe that surrounds the sport. Having had a 'budgie' program for three separate events I found that I achieved above my expectations and it has given me a greater understanding of how to manage myself and my body rather than aimlessly training with no real idea as I did previously.
Back ground: Played aussie rules, cricket and tried plenty of other sports while growing up.

- Busso Half IM 03, 05, 06, 07
- Busso Ironman 05,06
